Three hours north in New Mexico’s largest city, students at the University of New Mexico can choose from two different accredited master’s in counseling degrees or pursue a doctorate in counselor education. Although UNM has earned the overall top spot on this ranking, there is one area in particular in which the university excels: on-the-job training. For example, counseling students can hone their skills at the Manzanita Counseling Center, a “community outreach program” and free clinic in Albuquerque that has been in business for more than two decades. And all students in this top counseling master’s degree participate in the Traverse Outreach Program, which goes far beyond traditional learning to place individuals in valuable job shadowing positions with partners in the local area.
