The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Wilmington University offers a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

The Bachelor of Science in Psychology provides students with in-depth instruction on the brain and behavior. The program combines theory and application and students have the ability to explore internship opportunities in various settings. A total of 122 credits are needed to complete the program. The psychology core courses include Theories of Personality, Inferential Statistics, Ethics and Values in Behavioral Science, Social Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Group Dynamics, Biological Basis of Behavior, Research Methods in Psychology, Learning and Cognition, Tests and Measurements, Ethnic Groups and Minorities, and Seminar in Psychology. The program is offered both on-campus and 100 percent online.

The Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling provides students with a well-rounded program that inspires multicultural understanding and skills. The program involves two years of coursework with one-year clinical experience to enable students to apply knowledge and theory into actual settings. Students must complete two field experiences and an internship component. A total of 60 credits are needed to complete the degree. The required core courses include Theories of Counseling, Human Development, Group Counseling, Tools, Techniques, and Strategies of Counseling, Ethics and Practices of Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Counseling for Career Development, Family Counseling, Counseling Diverse Populations, Methods of Research and Program Evaluation, and Psychopharmacology for Counselors.

The College of Education offers a Master of Education in Elementary and Secondary School Counseling. The program focuses on counseling strategies, ethical decision making, critical thinking, research, and advocacy skills. The program is grounded in the American School Counselor Association’s National Model. Students are able to select from a certification track or non-certification track. The certification track prepares students for state licensure as a school counselor. The non-certification track is intended for students seeking to work with children outside of school settings that do not require licensure, including mental health facilities, group homes, and nonprofit organizations. The certification option requires the completion of 51 credit hours, passing score on the PRAXIS II: Professional School Counselor examination, and two internships. The non-certification option requires the completion of 39 credit hours and a non-certification 200-hour practicum. The core courses for both options include Human Behavior and Child Development, Introduction to School Counseling and Theories, E-Folio, Ethical Issues in School Counseling, College and Career Readiness K-12, The Counselor as Consultant, Special Education Law and the School Counselor’s Role, and Testing, Measurements, Group Counseling, Individual Counseling Skills and Strategies, Family Counseling, and Research in School Counseling.

Federal Work Study

The Federal Work Study Program is an employment program for students who demonstrate financial need. Through this program, the federal government pays for the wages of eligible students, easing the process for students finding suitable employment. Students must take at least six credits per semester. They are able to work up to 20 hours a week and are paid biweekly. The pay varies by each situation but is at least the current federal minimum wage.
