The University of Memphis offers several degree programs designed to prepare those who wish to enter the counseling and psychology field.

The Post-Master of Clinical Mental Health Counseling is designed for those who prepare diverse, knowledgeable and skilled counseling professionals who are able to obtain positions in private practice, substance abuse programs, and educational settings. Upon completion of the program, students are eligible for licensure as a Tennessee Licensed Professional Counselor and will meet the State’s Mental Health Service Provider educational requirements. The Post-Graduate Certificate in School Counseling prepares students for licensure by the Tennessee State Department of Education as a School Counselor. The mission is to prepare counselors who will ethically promote the emotional well-being of individuals, families and diverse client populations. The program requires 60 graduate hours as well as a practicum and internship. Courses required may include:

The Master of Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling provides students with a full range of rehabilitation counseling services to facilitate the personal, educational and vocational development of individuals who may have impairments whether emotional, physical, cognitive or neurological. The program requires 60 semester hours and prepares students to become Licensed Professional Counselors in Tennessee. Courses required may include:

About the University of Memphis

The Tennessee Legislature enacted the General Education Bill in 1909 which established the University of Memphis. At the time, the school was known as the West Tennessee State Normal School with the mission to educate teachers.

In 1925, the name of the school changed to the West Tennessee State Teachers College and became the Memphis State College in 1941. The school began offering graduate programs in 1950 and gained university status in 1957. At the time, it was known as Memphis State University but in 1994, the name was changed to the University of Memphis.

Today, the campus sits on 1,607 acres with 239 buildings on eight sites. Enrollment is over 20,500 and 68 percent of the student population attends full-time. There are approximately 2,500 employees that include 930 full-time faculty.

University of Memphis Application Requirements

Applicants to graduate programs must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university. They must provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. In order to apply to counselor or psychology programs at the University of Memphis must have an undergraduate degree in counseling or psychology. They must also provide official GRE or GMAT scores, a current resume, and letters of recommendation.

The University of Memphis Tuition and Financial Aid

Undergraduate on-campus tuition at the University of Memphis is $305 per credit hour for Tennessee residents and $488 for non-residents. Graduate tuition courses is $479 per credit hour for residents and $488 for non-residents. Online courses are offered at the same tuition rates as on-campus courses.

Financial aid is available at the University of Memphis. Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit any additional documents requested to the Student Aid Office. Before being qualified for financial aid, students must be accepted into the degree program. Financial aid may be offered to graduate students in the form of fellowships, assistantships or loans.
