The program leads to Clinical Mental Health Certification in the State of Louisiana. Students gain an understanding of how to assess, diagnose and treat mental and emotional disorders. They also gain skills used in individual, group, couples and family counseling. Students gain an understanding of anxiety disorders, trauma disorders, dual diagnosis, and normal life stressors. Some of the courses required include Counseling Theories, Career Counseling, Maladaptive Psychopathology, Trauma, and Addictions.

The Master of Science in School Counseling provides an understanding of how to deliver high-quality school counseling services to students in grades K-12. The program prepares students for licensure in Louisiana as a school counselor. Students gain an understanding of the latest theoretical orientations, treatment approaches, and school counseling models. They gain an understanding of biological, psychological, interpersonal and sociocultural-historical dimensions that must be integrated for young people to develop. Courses required may include Legal and Ethical Issues in Counseling, Multicultural Populations, Crisis Intervention Counseling and Principles of Administration in School Counseling Programs.

About the University of Louisiana at Monroe

The University of Louisiana at Monroe began in 1931 as a junior college. Initially, the school was known as Ouachita Parish Junior College and was part of a parish school system. Classes were held in Brown Hall. It became Northeast Center of Louisiana University in 1934 only to change its name again five years later to Northeast Junior College of Louisiana State University.

Academic degrees were added in 1950 which led to yet another name change when the school became Northeast Louisiana State College. At that time, control of the school was taken over by the State Board of Education. The school gained university status in 1970 and underwent its final name change to the University of Louisiana at Monroe in 1999.

The University of Louisiana at Monroe Application Requirements

Applicants to undergraduate programs must have a 2.35 minimum GPA in high school and must meet minimum scores on the ACT or SAT. They must submit official high school transcripts along with official ACT or SAT scores. Adult learners without college credits after graduation must also submit official high school transcripts. Applicants who have earned college credit after high school graduation must submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.

In order to apply to the Clinical Mental Health Counselor or the School Counseling program, applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university. They must provide transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. They must also have a 3.0 overall GPA and a minimum combined score of 290 on the GRE.

The University of Louisiana at Monroe Tuition and Financial Aid

Undergraduate tuition for both residents and non-residents is $685.53 per credit hour. Graduate tuition is $802.76 for both residents and non-residents.

Financial aid is available based on both merit and need. The University of Louisiana at Monroe provides over $14 million per year in financial aid to students. They must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to qualify and the form must be renewed each year.
