Eight UDM Majors for Psychology and Counseling Careers

At Reno Hall, the College of Liberal Arts & Education confers a 126-credit B.A. in General Psychology for University of Detroit Mercy Titans to study behavioral trends with opportunities to join Psi Chi, enter the ReBUILDetroit Program, intern with Holy Cross Services, and semester in Volterra. Chaired by Dr. Linda Slowik, the B.A. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology delivers a 126-credit, HLC-accredited curriculum with an Accelerated Five-Year B.A./M.A. option for 93 percent job placement at Bosch, Ford Motors, Carhartt, Human Synergystics, and others. The B.A. in Developmental Psychology takes a 126-credit, four-year path to the NCFR Family Life Educator certification with courses like Parenting and Infant Development plus 180 practicum hours. Michigan’s oldest B.S. in Addiction Studies led by Dr. Nancy Calleja also has 50 years of experience preparing counselors in Detroit or Clinton Township for the CAAC credential with 126 credits, such as Substance Abuse Recovery and Health Psychology.

Established in 1964, the M.A. in Counseling provides three 60-credit, CACREP-accredited concentrations for Clinical Mental Health, Addiction, and School Counseling with 600 internship hours to fulfill Michigan’s LPC certification for 92 percent one-month job placement. Directed by Dr. Kristen Abraham, the M.A. in Clinical Psychology follows a 45-credit, 24-month Detroit plan to the Limited Licensed in Psychology (LLP) after 5000-level courses like Psychotherapy, 500 practicum hours, and a comprehensive exam. On the McNichols Campus, the Ed.S. in School Psychology requires minimum 147 Praxis II scores to begin a 66-credit, three-year sequence with 600 practicum plus 1,200 internship hours at the Keidan Special Education Center, Ross-Hill Academy, Burton International School, and more. Advised by Dr. Barry Dauphin, the Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology admits 5-10 candidates each August for a 96-credit, APA-accredited path with Psychology Clinic practice, dissertation work, and year-long internships.

About the University of Detroit Mercy

The University of Detroit Mercy originated in 1877 when Bishop Caspar Henry Borgess invited Jesuit priests to settle on Jefferson Avenue and build Detroit College. In 1911, the Society of Jesus renamed it the University of Detroit. In 1927, Father John P. McNichols relocated the men’s college to northwest Detroit near Palmer Woods. In 1941, Mother Mary Carmelita Manning opened her own school, Mercy College, for Detroit women. In 1965, the University of Detroit launched one of America’s first urban law clinics. In 1980, Detroit joined the Horizon League for NCAA Division I athletics. In 1984, Detroit notably graduated the future U.S. Senator Gary Peters. By 1990, the two independent institutes merged into the coed University of Detroit Mercy. In 2016, UDM founded its Center for Social Entrepreneurship.

Endowed for $63.3 million, the University of Detroit Mercy now employs 693 faculty instructing 2,880 undergrad and 2,231 post-grad Titans from 50 states online, on its 91-acre McNichols campus, or at six Michigan satellites with 60+ clubs like the Graduate Counseling Association. In 2019, Detroit Mercy accepted an NCAA Public Recognition Award. In 2018, UDM won a Pride of District V CASE Excellence Award. The University of Detroit Mercy had the 2019 AAP Gerald M. Kramer Award for Excellence recipient too. The U.S. News & World Report ranked UDM 179th overall with the 133rd best for vets programs and 177th top psychology school. University of Detroit Mercy Accreditation Details

On December 16, 2016, the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association (HLC-NCA) Institutional Actions Council notified the University of Detroit Mercy that its Level VI accreditation was extended through the next 2026-27 reaffirmation cycle under President Antoine M. Garibaldi, Ph.D. Located 277 miles west via Interstate 94 in Chicago, this giant 19-state Great Lakes Region accreditor is authorized by the U.S. Department of Education to review UDM’s 46 baccalaureate, 42 master’s, one specialist, and 10 doctoral degrees. Further, the Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology was reaffirmed by the American Psychological Association (APA) through June 2028. The Council on Accreditation for Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) last accredited the M.A. in Counseling on July 5, 2015. The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) has also approved Detroit Mercy since 2012.

University of Detroit Mercy Application Requirements

Admission at the University of Detroit Mercy is classified as “moderately difficult” by Peterson’s because 3,120 of the 3,760 Fall 2018 applicants were chosen for 83 percent acceptance. First-year Titans seeking a B.A. in Psychology or B.S. in Addiction Studies must fulfill prerequisite secondary training. Passing the GED with a 450 or better score is equivalent to a diploma. The Class of 2022 reported an average cumulative GPA of 3.56. The middle 50th percentile had ACT scores of 22-27. Mid-range admitted SAT scores were 520-610 for reading and 520-620 for math. Foreign learners might need a minimum 81 TOEFL iBT or 6.5 IELTS score. Current undergrads with 12+ non-remedial college credits and GPAs over 2.0 can transfer. The Michigan Transfer Agreement connects UMD with 25 nearby colleges like Ferris State and Xavier. The Graduate Admission Office seeks a four-year bachelor’s completion with at least 2.75 GPAs. Previous master’s credits need 3.0 or better GPAs. Fifteen credits of behavioral science courses, including Statistics, are prerequisites. Minimum new GRE scores above 291 are also expected.

The University of Detroit Mercy set freshman deadlines of November 1st for Early Action and March 1st for Regular Decision. Scholarship priority is available until December 1st. Department of Psychology transfers must apply at least one month before start dates. Prospective M.A. in Counseling students must file by May 15th for Fall, October 1st for Winter, or February 1st for Summer. The M.A. in Clinical Psychology and Ed.S. in School Psychology close on March 15th. Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology cohorts are considered until January 1st. Tuition and Financial Aid

For 2019-20, the University of Detroit Mercy is billing full-time B.A. in Psychology majors $14,420 per term or $28,840 annually. Studying part-time incurs $1,080 per credit. International students are charged $1,579 per credit. Overload credits over 18 cost $961 apiece. Co-op tuition is $1,073 per assignment. Living at the McNichols Campus’ dorms like Shiple Hall adds $3,668 to $7,213 for residency fees. UDM budgets $1,240 for textbooks and $2,578 for personal expenses. Annual bachelor’s attendance averages $42,648 on-site and $34,462 if commuting. Graduate programs in the College of Liberal Arts & Education are generally priced $1,626 per credit. One exception is for M.A. in Counseling cohorts who spend $981 per credit.

According to the NCES College Navigator, the Office of Financial Aid in Fisher Administration Center Room 70 helps 100 percent of new full-time UDM Titans enroll with median assistance of $32,387 each for $17.32 million combined. University funds include the Fuller Memorial Scholarship, AIA Minority Disadvantaged Scholarship, Automation Alley Discount, School Educator’s Tuition Waiver, Jesuit Founders Scholarship, Detroit Mercy Grant, Catholic Education Grant, McNichols Puritan Lodge Community Counsel Scholarship, Dylenski Travel Grant, Ford-EEOC Endowed Scholarship, and Senior Citizen Discount. The Freshman Merit Scholarship provides up to $13,000 to outstanding undergrads based on ACT/SAT scores. The Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship covers full tuition for transfers with 24+ eligible credits and cumulative GPAs over 3.5. Federal resources, such as the Pell Grant or Work-Study Program, necessitate FAFSA applications coded 002323.
