According to the Department of Psychology, psychology is one of the most popular programs at Troy University, and more than 1,000 students are enrolled in the psychology program at the school. TU also has many students enrolled in its counseling programs. Most programs in counseling and psychology are offered in a variety of formats, and at several campuses operated by the university, so it’s easy for students to enroll and take classes in a manner that suits their personal scheduling needs.

Students who choose psychology as their major can study at the main campus in Troy, choose Troy Online as their enrollment format, or take classes at various locations in Dothan, Montgomery, and Phenix City. Similarly, many of the university’s counseling programs are offered in multiple formats and at multiple locations. Students interested in psychology will enroll in undergraduate programs and students who want to study counseling will study at the graduate level. The university also offers several certificates in counseling.

Students seeking education in psychology will choose the major in psychology or one of the minors available in applied behavior analysis, psychological research, substance abuse addiction, or psychology. Some of the careers available to graduates of the psychology program include clinical psychologist, healthcare social worker, marriage & family therapist, nanny, patient representative, or regulatory affairs manager.

Classes a student may take while enrolled in Troy University’s programs in psychology include General Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Orientation to Psychology, Research Methods, and Basic Statistics. Students will also take a Senior Seminar in Psychology and choose from several electives to augment their degree. Total hours required to graduate from the program in psychology are 120 hours, which can be completed over the course of four years.

Prospective students who decide to study counseling will have five degree and certification options available with a degree in clinical mental health counseling, general counseling, rehabilitation counseling, student affairs counseling, and substance abuse counseling. Also available is an education specialist program that awards a non-teacher certification in community counseling.

Students who want to study counseling and earn a graduate degree will need to attend classes on one of the university’s campuses. However, students may also study counseling through Troy Online in any one of the university’s four certificate programs. Certificate options include rehabilitation and deaf/hard of hearing studies, counseling military populations, clinical mental health counseling, and addictions counseling.

In addition to the Master of Science programs in counseling, the university also offers opportunities to earn Education Specialist degrees in School Counseling or Community Counseling. Classes a student may take in the school’s counseling degree programs include Evaluation and Assessment of the Individual, Human Lifespan & Development, Behavior Pathology, and Diagnosis & Treatment Planning.

About Troy University

Troy University is a public university in Alabama in a city of the same name. The school was founded in 1887 and was originally known as Troy State Normal School. The college has more than 18,000 students enrolled at its Troy campus, as well as at its satellite locations and its online distance learning programs. The official colors of the school are black, cardinal, and silver, and the teams who play for the school are nicknamed the Trojans.

In total, the university has four campuses, as well as 60 teaching sites across 11 countries and 17 different states. The university counts more than 100,000 alumni across the world. The school’s original mission was to train and educate future teachers. The school would eventually become a four-year college and would gain eligibility to grant master’s degrees in 1957.

Troy University Accreditation Details

Regional accreditation for Troy University comes from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, which allows the school to award associate through doctoral degrees. Other bodies that have granted accreditation to programs and schools within the university include the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP) and the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE).

The Master of Science in Community Counseling and the Master of Science in School Counseling are accredited by CACREP, and the Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling is accredited by CORE. The university’s education programs are also accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation.

Troy University Application Requirements

Students can gain unconditional admission to Troy University if they meet several minimum standards with their application materials. Those minimum standards include having a 2.0 high school GPA and a 20 on the ACT or 1030 on the SAT. Students can qualify for conditional admission if they have a 2.5 high school GPA and a 17 to 19 on the ACT or a 910 on the SAT. Prospective students who are at least 25-years-old do not need to submit standardized test scores.

Students who want to enter graduate school will need to submit the official application for admission, submit transcripts and test scores, and ask for a teacher to submit a recommendation. Students must also submit information about their medical history if they intend to study on campus, and international students must confirm proficiency in English.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Undergraduate students at Troy University who are in-state students will pay $325 per credit hour, and out-of-state students will pay $650 per credit hour. Graduate tuition for in-state students is billed at $425 per credit hour, and out-of-state students pay $850 per credit hour. Some additional fees students must pay include a general university fee of $42 per credit hour and a registration fee of $50 each semester.

Other fees include a housing application fee of $100, a transcript fee of $10, a dining dollar fee of $275 per semester, and a student facility fee of $50 to $100 each semester. The student facility fee is only required for students who live on campus. Some students may also need to pay program fees that may range from $15 to $180 a semester and payment plan fees of $25 a year.

Financial aid at the university can come from many sources including federal student aid, institutional aid, and state aid. Students are encouraged to submit their FAFSA form early to secure a good financial aid package. Scholarships available at Troy University include the Foundation Scholarship, the Music & Band Scholarship, and the Theater & Dance Scholarship.
