About Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College is a private institution of higher learning located in St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana. It is the oldest Catholic institution in the state. It was established in 1840 as Saint Mary’s Female Institute by Saint Mother Theodore Guerin and the Sisters of Providence. The first bachelor’s degree was conferred in 1899. It became Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in 1928. It started offering coeducational graduate programs in 1984. In 2005, the college granted admission to men for its undergraduate distance program. In 2015, the college opened admission for all programs to both women and men. Today, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College is home to about 1,700 students on its rural 67-acre campus. It operates on the semester-based academic calendar.
