About Rowan University

In the early 1900s, teachers in New Jersey often lacked the training necessary to due to a shortage of schools that provided such an education. The state created what were then known as normal schools to address the need for trained teachers. Residents in the town of Glassboro, which had an excellent rail system as well as a good balance of industry and agriculture, raised more than $7,000 to purchase 25 acres to donate for use as the normal school. The land included the Whitney mansion and carriage house, property that had been owned by the Whitney family, owners of Whitney Glass Works during the 1800s.
