There are several counseling and psychology programs available at Northern Vermont University, which was recently created out of a merger between two local Vermont colleges including Lyndon State College and Johnson State College. Currently, the university offers its programs in the cities of Lyndon and Johnson, as well as online. Degrees available include a major in Applied Psychology and Human Services, a major and minor in Psychology, a graduate degree in Counseling, and a concentration for psychology students in Health and Sport Psychology.
Students who choose Psychology as their focus can major solely in psychology, or they may also choose to specialize in Health and Sport Psychology. The university shares that one of the benefits of enrolling in the program is the opportunity to participate in an internship with one of the 300 different companies and organizations that have affiliations with the university. Students also have the opportunity to engage in academic research while enrolled in the Psychology degree program, and students will also benefit from a program aligned with the standards of the American Psychological Association. Students who choose the Master of Arts in Counseling program will attend classes at the Johnson campus where most classes in the major are offered in the evening and on weekends. Students can expect to spend anywhere from 2.5 to 3.5 years in the program. Available tracks in the program include School Counseling, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Addictions Counseling, and a General Track. Classes a student may take include Counseling Theories, Counseling & Addictive Behaviors, Psychopathology, Lifespan Development, and Social & Cultural Foundations. Students must complete a total of 60 credits to graduate.

About Northern Vermont University
Northern Vermont University was created in 2018 when the small Johnson State College merged with Lyndon State College. Johnson State College was founded in 1828 by a man named John Chesmore. Lyndon State College was founded in 1911 as a teacher’s college. Around 1,700 students are attending the newly created university, which is located in Johnson, Vermont. The school’s official colors are green, white, and navy, and the athletic teams play as the Badgers. Facilities that serve students at the university include the Dibden Center for the Arts, John Dewey Hall, the Library & Learning Center, and the Visual Arts Center. There’s also a 1,000-acre nature area maintained by the college, which is called the Babcock Nature Preserve.

Johnson State College was most recently accredited in 2017, and the most recent accreditation cycle for Lyndon State College occurred in 2016. The merged university, Northern Vermont University, is also regionally accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education. For example, the Exercise Science Department is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs and was reaccredited most recently in 2015. Northern Vermont University Application Requirements
Students can apply to most of the programs at Northern Vermont University on a rolling basis, which means they can apply in any season in advance of the semester they wish to attend. Students are invited to apply online through the school’s official web-based application, or they may use the Common Application option. Application requirements vary and are based on a student’s status and the method they wish to attend school. For example, students who want to apply to one of the 100% online programs will need to submit the official application, high school transcripts, and a $50 tuition deposit upon acceptance. Students must also have a GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale in high school. Students should contact the university for specifics on their chosen program of study.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Undergraduate residents of Vermont pay $469 per credit to attend the university, and non-residents pay $1,011 per credit. The university estimates the total cost of tuition at $11,256 per year for Vermont residents and $24,960 for non-residents. Students may also need to pay for room and board and a meal plan if they live on campus. Other fees a student may need to pay include a student activities fee, facilities fee, and course fee. For graduate students, tuition is charged at a per-credit rate and is $605 for Vermont residents and $881 for non-Vermont residents. Some students may qualify for regional discounts if they live in Canada, New York, or certain counties in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
Financial aid is available in the form of loans, scholarships, and grants. Students will need to submit their FAFSA form to qualify for financial aid through the federal government and from the university.
