In 1919, the Indiana Conference of the Wesleyan United Methodist Church purchased the Marion Normal School after the school merged with one located in Muncie in order to establish an institute of higher learning in the area. Since there was already a successful Conference school located in Muncie, it was determined the Marion location would be a good location for an additional college and $100,000 endowment was raised for the new school.
