At Tom Raper Hall, the School of Humanities & Social Sciences awards the B.S. in Psychology for Indiana University-East Red Wolves to develop a useful understanding of the mind and behavior for application in human service careers. Chaired by Dr. Duane Lundy, the 2002 Fullerton Foundation Teaching Award recipient, this 120-credit Richmond program engages students in Psi Chi activities, internships like Reid Health or Oaklawn, and overseas trips in 50 countries. On Canvas, the Online B.S. in Psychology lets associate grads conveniently transfer general education and finish their bachelor’s experience anytime 24/7. This 60-credit, HLC-accredited Web option led by Dr. Amanda Kraha speeds through eight-week courses, such as Behavioral Neuroscience and Cognition, to the capstone.
Since 2012, Indiana University-East has delivered an M.A. in Mental Health Counseling for hybrid Spring cohorts of 20 post-grads to develop the ethical therapeutic acumen to assist people across the lifespan with emotional or behavioral disorders. Directed by Dr. Beth Trammell, the 60-credit, two-year curriculum fulfills the requirements to become a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in Indiana. Required 500-level courses, such as Psychological Assessment or Child Abuse Prevention, are available 50 percent online and 50 percent in Richmond. After 100 first-term practicum hours, students complete 900-hour internships like Centerstone, Trilogy Health, Families First, Park Center, and Procare Therapy. Some might add the Alcohol & Drug Abuse Certificate or Gerontology Certificate.
About Indiana University-East
Indiana University-East originated in 1946 when Earlham College, a four-year Quaker liberal arts school, created an Indiana University extension on its Richmond campus. In 1957, Purdue entered the cooperation agreement to found the Eastern Indiana Center of Earlham College. On July 1, 1971, the Board of Trustees acquired its 225 acres for the seventh regional IU site. In 1972, Director Fred Grohsmeyer welcomed an inaugural class of 633 to Indiana University-East. Fully accredited in 1975, IUE granted its first bachelor’s to Thomas Joseph Stolle in 1977. In 1999, Springwood Hall was erected to house the Child Development Center. Five years later, in-state tuition reciprocity was created for Ohio residents. In 2007, the M.S. in Education became Indiana University-East’s first graduate program. In 2010, IU-East started online degree completion options like the B.S. in Psychology.
Endowed for $5.8 million, Indiana University-East now employs 204 faculty teaching 3,722 Red Wolves at an 18:1 ratio online or face-to-face at three campuses near the Ohio border with 30+ clubs like Circle K International and the LGBTQS Alliance. In 2018, IUE had an Outstanding Higher Educator of Indiana Award recipient. In 2016, Indiana University-East celebrated the Athena International Leadership Award winner. Indiana University-East Accreditation Details
On February 8, 2016, the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association (HLC-NCA) Institutional Actions Council accepted the Fifth-Year Interim Report from Indiana University-East to keep the Level III accreditation current through 2021-22 under its sixth chancellor, Dr. Kathryn Cruz-Uribe, who earned the NAU Outstanding Teaching Award. Located 250 miles north via Interstate 65 in Chicago, this huge 19-state Heartland Region accreditor is authorized by the U.S. Education Department to review IUE’s 28 baccalaureate, 10 master’s, and 17 certificate offerings from Richmond to Lawrenceburg. Please note IU-East isn’t accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) though.
Indiana University-East Application Requirements
Entering Indiana University-East is classified “moderately difficult” by Peterson’s because only 1,284 of the 1,979 Fall 2017 applicants were triumphant for 65 percent acceptance. First-year Red Wolves hunting the B.S. in Psychology must have completed the Indiana Core 40 curriculum or another state’s 28-unit equivalent. Above-average GED subject scores over 160 would qualify. Ranking in the upper half of one’s class is strongly preferred. On average, freshmen achieve a 3.24 GPA, 1031 SAT, and 21 ACT mark. The Honors Program expects cumulative GPAs of 3.5 or better. Foreigners from non-English countries need a minimum 550 TOEFL, 550 SAT Reading, 6.0 IELTS, or 25 ACT score. Online B.S. in Psychology cohorts must transfer 60-64 credits from accredited associate programs with at least 2.0 GPAs. The School of Humanities & Social Sciences seeks M.A. entrants with four-year bachelor’s prep in psychology, counseling, or education. GPAs above 3.0 plus minimum 300 GRE scores are recommended. Performance in psychology prerequisites should exceed 3.25 GPAs.
Indiana University-East set a May 1st priority and August 17th final deadline for freshmen. For scholarship consideration, apply before February 15th. Undergrad transfers can apply until August 20th, January 10th, or May 10th. The M.A. in Mental Health Counseling considers cohorts on a space-available basis from March 15th on. Tuition and Financial Aid
For 2018-19, Indiana University-East charged in-state undergrad tuition of $7,344 annually. Non-resident B.S. in Psychology majors paid $19,400 by year. Part-time campus study cost $224 to $626 per credit. Bachelor’s students covered the $178 technology fee, $65 activity fee, and $65 administrative fee. IUE budgeted $868 for textbooks and $4,010 for miscellaneous each year. Off-campus living expenses averaged $7,382. Annual traditional attendance equaled about $19,604 in-state and $31,660 out-of-state. Online B.S. in Psychology courses billed Indianans $224 and non-residents $321 per credit. Distance education fees were $50 per credit. M.A. in Mental Health Counseling cohorts spent $293 to $692 per credit.
According to the NCES College Navigator, the Financial Aid Office in Whitewater Hall Room 112 helps 95 percent of new IUE Red Wolves enroll with median assistance of $7,751 each for $2.01 million combined. University funds include the Ruth Brown Scholarship, Antonio Ochoa Memorial Scholarship, Charlie Nelms Transfer Scholarship, Louis Gibbs Memorial Scholarship, Byron & Betty Park Scholarship, Tom Raper Scholarship, Vigran Family Scholarship, Harry & Marilyn Voyles Scholarship, James Weigand Scholarship, Israel David Edelman Memorial Scholarship, Maurene Specht Scholarship, and Ron Powell Scholarship. The Academic Achievement Scholarship gifts up to $14,000 for Level One undergrads with minimum 1360 SAT or 29 ACT marks. The $4,000 Ivy Tech Richmond Transfer Scholarship would help Online B.S. in Psychology majors applying by May 1st with GPAs over 3.5. Federal aid, including Pell Grant and Stafford Loan, eligibility is determined by FAFSA forms coded 001811. Hoosiers who participate in the Indiana 21st Century Scholars Program also earn $4,000 total.
