About Concordia University

Founded in 1893 as a Christian School for men who planned to enter ministry in the Lutheran Church, Concordia University was initially known as Concordia High School. The following year, the school relocated from temporary quarters to a former training school for boys between Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Concordia University struggled financially during the Great Depression due to low enrollment but remained open due to the generosity of the congregants of the Synod. In addition, the faculty agreed to work without pay as the school struggled. After World War II, enrollment increased as soldiers returned to take advantage of the GI Bill. Women were admitted in 1950 and the high school separated from the college in 1962. In 1996, the school became Concordia University.
